Since there is a lot of people who do not have English as their first language and they did not understand quite a few conversations of the Hollywood movies because of their accent but subtitle helps them a lot at times like these and if you frequently watch English movies with subtitles then you can improve English.

Because subtitles work in two ways- firstly, it simplifies the conversation and makes it easy to understand. Secondly, when we hear and see what is being said in movies our brain speaks in our mind and sometimes we find ourselves repeating the same dialogue which we weren’t even aware that we caught that.

Here we are going to suggest to you some good movies which will help you to improve your English-

Toy Story (1995)

Starring- Tim Allen and Tom Hanks.

Story

This is an animated (cartoon) movie that follows a young boy called Andy. Andy loves playing in his room with his toys. He especially loves to play with his action figure called Woody. When Andy disappears, the toys come to life. Andy’s mom gives him a new toy for his birthday which is called Buzz Lightyear, which becomes Andy’s new favorite toy to play with.

Woody feels hurt and is jealous of the attention Andy gives his new toy and as a result, he tries to get rid of him. However, as the two toys begin to fight they get lost. This story follows their adventure and is full of action and a lot of laughs.

Why it’s a good movie to learn English- Animation movies such as “Toy Story” are usually written for and aimed at a younger audience which means the story and vocabulary used are not complicated. Even though the movie is mainly for kids, it doesn’t feel like it. The director made it attractive for adults too, by including a little bit of adult humor in it.

Favorite quotes from the movie – “You’ve got a friend in me. You got troubles and I got them too. There isn’t anything I wouldn’t do for you. We stick together; we can see it through ’cause you’ve got a friend in me.”

The Hunger Games (2012)

Starring- Jennifer Lawrence and Liam Hemsworth.

Story

This story is set in the future and set in a futuristic nation called Panem. Every year there are two people who are chosen to represent their district in the Hunger Games fight. Those who are chosen are done so by a lottery system. This follows the story of Katniss, a 16-year-old girl, from District 12. It shows her intense training and then how she is suddenly thrown into the fight to represent her area in the 74th annual hunger games.

Why it’s a great movie for learning English- This is a very visual movie and what you miss in the dialogue, you’ll be able to be filled in by the visual action. While the actions are fast, the language is relatively easy to understand unlike other sci-fi and futuristic movies which use complex terms.

The accent is a clean one so you’ll have no problem understands what the characters say. The characters don’t speak too fast and it’s fairly easy to understand what’s going on. It’s also an action-filled movie and has an interesting plot, which makes it even better. This movie has something for everyone as it cleverly includes action, romance, comedy, and the future all in one movie.

Favorite quotes from the movie – “You don’t forget the face of the person who was your last hope.”

The Social Network (2010)

Starring- Jesse Eisenberg, Justin Timberlake, and Andrew Garfield.

If you want to know about the history of Facebook. This story tells the story of the young Mark Zuckerberg, a geeky Harvard student, who wants to revolutionize the way we communicate with other people.

“The Social Network” (2010)

The story shows how Zuckerberg accidentally finds fame and becomes a multi-millionaire – but there is a price. Many of his old friends and people he’s connected with over the years want him to fail.

Mark Zuckerberg shows us he’s got everything in terms of material things but very little in terms of friends. Mark Zuckerberg finds himself in court a number of times and the movie questions whether it was really Mark Zuckerberg or not who first created the world’s largest social network, Facebook.

Why it’s a good movie to learn English -This is an award-winning movie written by Aaron Sorkin. He’s famous for his natural dialogue and funny lines, which makes this movie really enjoyable to watch and of course it’s easy to follow too.

Also, almost everyone understands and knows Facebook and you will automatically be able to relate to the movie and not to mention, you’ll also be able to pick up a lot of great English vocabulary related to computers, technology, and social networks.

Frozen (2013)

Story

A ‘snow queen’ of sorts, Princess Elsa has the power to create snow. Everything she touches turns into ice. A deadly mishap convinces her that she is born with a curse. Ashamed and heart broken, she distances herself from the world and goes into a self-proclaimed exile. Clumsy and vivacious, her younger sister Anna is kept in the dark about Elsa’s secret until their kingdom bears the brunt of it.

“FROZEN” (2013)
“ Frozen” (2013)

Can Anna rescue their kingdom from Elsa’s uncontrollable icy powers? Will the sun shine upon their snow-clad kingdom again? Can the two rises above their insecurities and imperfections for the well-being of their people visually stunning and emotionally arresting, frozen is clearly the best-animated film of the year.

It’s an incredible journey of a brave girl, who sets out to find her sister – the reluctant ice-queen with the help of an adorable snowman and an unconventional ‘prince charming’. It is nowhere the ‘clichéd’ fairy-tale, with an archaic view on women. The film introduces the new age Disney princesses, who no longer wait to be rescued.

They are brave, uninhibited yet vulnerable and sacrificing. While snow looms over the kingdom, it’s the goodness of people that keep the fire burning. The songs are melodious and meaningful, while the 3D enhances the beauty of it all.

Also, Frozen redefines Disney’s quintessential ‘true love’ theory. Even if you are not into fairy-tales, you’ll love this one for its unpredictable and thus keeps you engaged throughout. It is not about seeking happiness with someone else, but being happy with who you truly are.

Why it’s a good movie to learn English- We can choose “Frozen” for two main reasons. First, it is such a popular movie; I’m sure many people are somewhat familiar with it or have seen it before. Second, Disney movies are usually good to start with because they are mostly aimed at children, and so the language is a little easier to understand. There are not too many tough vocabulary words or phrases in this clip.

Favorite quote from this movie– “All one can do is the next right thing.”

Shrek (2001)

Story

Shrek is a grumpy, smelly, and ugly ogre, living peacefully in a swamp. One night, he suddenly finds his land has been squatted by a mass of fairy-tale creatures (Pinocchio, the three little pigs, Peter Pan, Snow White, Cinderella, among others), who have been banished by the evil Lord Farquaad. One of these is a donkey (who just won’t shut up). Accompanied by him, Shrek confronts Lord Farquaad, demanding his land back.

Farquaad does him a deal, telling him to rescue Princess Fiona from a dragon-guarded castle, to get his swamp back. Shrek and Donkey go and rescue the Princess, narrowly avoiding being burned by the dragon. Fiona is disgruntled about being rescued by an ugly ogre, rather than Prince Charming. However, despite their differences, she and Shrek grow fond of each other.

On the second night of their return journey, Fiona hides in a windmill. Donkey finds her and discovers that she’s turned into an ogress. She explains that she’s under a spell, which can only be broken by true love’s first kiss.

Shrek overhears part of this, but misunderstands and thinks she doesn’t love him because he’s ugly. Just as she decides to tell Shrek the truth, the sun rises and she becomes a beautiful princess again. Lord Farquaad arrives and takes Fiona to his castle, and Shrek returns to his swamp. Both are miserable. Later, Shrek, Donkey, and Dragon head to Farquaad’s castle, to try to stop Fiona from marrying him. He tells Fiona Farquaad’s true intentions of marrying her.

But the sunsets and Fiona becomes an ogress again. Farquaad doesn’t want to marry her and sets the guards on everybody, but Dragon comes to the rescue and eats Farquaad. Shrek and Fiona kiss. Therefore, Fiona stays ugly (in conformity with the spell- “you find true love’s first kiss and then take love’s true form”), and marries Shrek, and they live “ugly” ever after.

Why it’s a good movie to learn English – This is a huge movie, seriously huge. You can tell the Disney animation studio really put mountains of effort and it shows they’re firing from all cylinders now. Music and an awesome sisterhood story separate this from many animation offerings of the past. Also, the computer-generated animation is really cool, pun intended.

It has something for everyone and that is why we loved it so much. Everything from action to romance and comedy to fantasy, this movie is perfect. Many movies from Disney are always uplifting and this one was even more so and that made this a very special experience. The language is also easy.

Favorite quote from this book– “but you are beautiful.”

Harry Potter

Starring- Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, Emma Watson.

Story

This is the tale of Harry Potter, an ordinary eleven-year-old boy serving as a sort of slave for his aunt and uncle who learns that he is actually a wizard and has been invited to attend the Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry.

Famous for an incident that happened at his birth, Harry makes friends easily at his new school. He soon finds, however, that the wizarding world is far more dangerous for him than he would have imagined, and he quickly learns that not all wizards are ones to be trusted.

Why this is a great movie for learning English- Harry Potter is written in a really simple language. It is apt for the intermediate level. The vocabulary is not that tough. Sometimes the way the sentences have been framed may seem so. Anyway, it is perfect to try and improve your language a bit.

Favorite quotes from this movie– “I am what I am an’ I’m not ashamed”.

Twilight

Starring- Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, and Taylor Lautner.

Story

Bella Swan, a teenager, has always been different from other teenagers. She never cared about being a part of the cool group of girls. When her mom remarries, Bella chooses to live with her dad in a small town in Washington. It’s a boring rainy town and nothing interesting ever happens until she meets a mysterious and very good-looking guy called Edward Cullen.

“Twilight”

Edward is like no other guy she’s ever met–he’s handsome, intelligent, and witty. He’s different because he’s a vampire and hasn’t aged since 1918. Bella and Edward fall in love and it’s like a modern-day story of Romeo and Juliet and forbidden love.

Why this is a great movie for learning English- This movie is aimed at teenage and young adult audiences and uses everyday English. The language is typically American and the accents of the characters are clear and easy to understand. This movie is based on author Stephanie Myer’s series and if you’ve already read the popular series in your own language then you’re going to understand the movie plot even more.

Favorite quotes from this movie– “Death is Peaceful, Life is Harder.”

After this, you can also do one thing i.e. start speaking in English. You have to try it at least. Stand in front of the mirror and speak to yourself in English. Trust us, it works wonders. You’ll be fluent in the language in no time.
