Hello everyone, in the previous topic we were talking about Personality Development. Today we are going to talk about Communication. In this topic, we will discuss- What is Communication, its types, the 7 C’s of communication, & elements of the communication process, and some tips that how we can improve our communication skills.   

What is Communication?

INTRODUCTION

The word “communication” comes from the Latin word “communi” which means “related”. “Communion” has the same root. Communication takes place between entities that have something in common, it happens between entities whose essence is shared. It is a process by which two systems exchange information because they have enough things in common to exchange.

Communication can also describe as a means of sending or receiving information, it is the simplest way to transfer messages and ideas among one another. It can be either verbal (using a language as the medium) or non-verbal (involves gestures). We should study communication for purpose of organization, knowledge, and development. Internet, Radio, newspapers, telephones, Television are means of communication.

According to the oxford dictionary, “Communication means, “imparting, conveying or exchange of ideas, knowledge, etc., whether by speech, writing or signs. Thus we can say that communication is the process of exchanging, thoughts, ideas, facts, emotions, and opinions between two or more other persons. 

According to William L. Megginson, ” Communication is the process of transmitting meanings, ideas, and understanding of a person or a group to another person or group.”

According to Newstrom & Keith Davis, “Communication is the transfer of information from one person to another. It is a way of reaching others by transmitting ideas, feelings, thoughts, facts, and values.”

According to Theo Haiman, “Communication means the process of passing information and understanding from one person to another.”

Verbal Communication

Verbal Communication is the communication that takes place orally. As we can see the name Verbal which means relating to words, so we can say that their language plays a key role. It is the type of communication when we listen to someone or communicate to someone verbally. It is essential for most interactions. This communication includes conversation and story-telling. 

Non-Verbal Communication

Non-Verbal Communication is the type of communication in which we don’t communicate through using words. It includes apparent behaviors such as facial expressions, body language, and eye contact. Sarcasm, complacency, deception, or genuineness often occurs within nonverbal communication.

Written Communication

Written Communication is the type of communication in which we communicate through written messages such as memos, emails, letters, etc. We can understand this as an example as you can see, you are reading this article and here grooming urban is communicating with you through writing so we can say the communication between us is written communication. 

Oral Communication

Oral communication is the type of communication in which we listen to someone through live sessions or video calls.

Visual Communication

Visual communication is the type of communication that includes signs, maps, drawings, colors, and graphic designs. This communication reinforces verbal communication and they help to make a point. Visual aids can be helpful for people to remember the important topics helps in presentation, or generally help to convey the message being represented. 

Inter-Personal Communication

Inter-personal communication is the type of communication in which two or more people communicate and exchange their knowledge.

Intra-Personal Communication

Talking with ourselves involves intra personal communication. 

Mass Communication

Mass Communication is the type of communication in which we can deliver our messages through mass or we can communicate with the masses. Radio is the way of mass communication.

So, we can say that communication is actually inescapable. We can’t escape or avoid communication. Now a day everything is communicating with us and there is no concept of life without communication.

But we can see that communication is one of the biggest challenges for most people. Be it a school student, college student, or your profession, all are stuck in this ambivalence. Communication acts as the entry pass in each stage of our life.

If we have good communicating skills we will always be confident from inside as well as outside and will be able to face all the challenges. Here, we are going to discuss some points which will help us to groom your communication. 

7 C’s of Communication

The 7 C’s of effective communication would help you to attain your goal. These are certain principles of communication. They are called 7 C’s because each of these principles begins with the alphabet “C”. So, the 7 C’s of the communication are as follow:-

Clarity

Clarity is the soul of a message. It means the accurate transfer of ideas from the sender’s side to the receiver. Every message should be conveyed in a clear manner. Clarity comes through clear thinking. A good message shows the idea directly and clearly.

Correctness

Language experts say that writing is art but difficult. There is no shortcut to being a good writer. It is learned through consistent practice and constant struggle. The message being communicated must be correct. Correctness refers to correct grammar, punctuation, and spelling.

Conciseness

The beauty of diction lies in its conciseness. Conciseness means brief and complete. Be as brief as possible. But it must not be so brief as to be discourteous. Conciseness is a prerequisite to effective messages. A concise message saves time and expense for both
sender and receiver.

Courtesy

Courtesy is the most important quality of the messenger. “Everyone gains where courtesy reigns” is an old but wise saying. Courtesy means politeness. It is an attitude that shows respect for others. It helps in building goodwill

Concreteness

Communicating concretely means being specific, meaningful, and clear. Vague and general
messages result in no response. It helps the receiver to understand the exact idea. Concrete use of available facts and figures adds to the authenticity of the message.

Consideration

Consideration is to put you in the place of the receiver. It means preparing every message with the message receiver in mind. This mode of consideration is called “you attitude”.

Completeness

A message should be complete to bring the desired result. A complete message contains all the facts required by the receiver. The receiver’s reaction to an incomplete message is often unfavorable. An incomplete message shows the negligence and carelessness of the writer.

Communication skills are important that play in professional life from understanding your client to making a perfect problem-solving approach. The 7 C’s of communication are a list of principles for written and spoken communications to ensure that they are effective. The 7 C’s are clarity, correctness, conciseness, courtesy, concreteness, consideration, and completeness.

Communication may be described as a technique regarding alternate of facts or ideas between people keeping specific positions in a business enterprise to attain mutual concord. The verbal exchange technique is dynamic in nature as opposed to a static phenomenon.

The communication process as such must be considered a continuous and dynamic inter-action, both affecting and being affected by many variables.

The individual that intends to deliver the message with the intention of passing information and ideas to others is referred to as the sender or communicator.

Ideas

That is the subject relies on the conversation. this may be an opinion, attitude, feelings, perspectives, orders, or pointers.

Encoding

Communication Channel

Feedback

Feedback is the process of ensuring that the receiver has received the message and understood it in the same sense as the sender meant it.

Watch live debates and participate in public debates

There is no better way to improve your communication skills than participating in debates or watching live debates. We already discussed that communication is a two-way channel, when we participate in group discussions or debates we learn how to listen and respect the other person. This point is an integral part of communication.

Expand your vocabulary

We will be judged more favorably in social situations if we demonstrate a broad vocabulary. The people who understand and appreciate complex words and phrases are at a real advantage, both personally and professionally.

Offering a helping hand

Giving and receiving help is a part of being human. Lending a hand to someone who needs practical or emotional support is rewarding and it can enrich your relationship with them.

Refine your voice and speaking style

It’s not just what we say but how we say it. Speaking at a suitable volume and pitch will make other people more inclined to listen to us.

Read books and novels

Reading books and novels can also help us to improve our communication skills, enhance our imagination, and teaches us to think from different perspectives. We can also learn from the author, how to present our thoughts and portray them.

Maintain a diary or personal notes

Practice writing every day, whether it is about the daily routine, poetry, story, or a blog. When we write, we instruct our own minds to channel our thoughts and let them come out.

Ask someone for advice

Successful people often call on others for advice on their way to the top. Asking advice from someone who has already been in our situation can save us a huge amount of time because we will get benefit from their experience and mistakes. Not only that but if we do it in the right way it can also lead us to good personal as well as professional relationships.

Watch lots of English movies

If we want to improve our English communication skills, watching English movies will be very beneficial for us. Slowly and steadily, we will begin to understand it and also get a good grasp of different vocabulary as well.
