We will begin by talking about the two types of placements you can sit for-

  • on-campus placement
  • off-campus placement

Now let us understand the meaning and difference between these one by one.

On campus placement

On-campus placement, as the name suggests is the placement drive organized in colleges to help students in their final year of college get recruited by a company. The companies that come for placement almost never go empty-handed and always had the number of students they come for.

The type of company or brand that come to a college for hire is determined by the reputation of the college. This also sometimes depends on how proactive the college or institution is or the training and placement department of a college is, and how legendary it works to get companies to the campus. So mostly you will see bigger brands coming to top colleges while average brands or startups mainly visit lesser ranking colleges.

Visiting companies usually have a step process for assessing and hiring candidates there are a number of rounds of assessments that students have to go through while applying for on-campus placements usually these are written subject-specific assessments, group discussions, aptitude tests, and interview rounds with the panelists Who come from the company. Sometimes there could be multiple rounds of the interview but generally, there are two core skills assessment interviews and personal interviews.

While applying for on-campus placements the students have to be ready with an updated resume, and a cover letter is almost never needed when you are sitting for an on-campus placement.

Off-campus placement

Now let’s talk about off-campus placements. Off-campus placements are placements that happened on the campus premises.

For this, the student has to apply directly to the company where he or she wants to work. For applying for the off-campus placement you can use various job portals such as-

  • Naukri.com
  • Shine Career Plus
  • Indeed
  • The Times Jobs
  • Internshala

For fresher jobs and internships most of the companies post job requirements on one or more of these job portals, and you can go to them and check if you find any job opening relevant for you also when going job hunting on these portals be ready with your resume.

Apart from the job portals nowadays companies also post job requirements on social media platforms such as LinkedIn, Instagram, and even Facebook so be sure to check these out. It is well for the company is where you want to apply to follow their pages and who knows that may be you find the job posting relevant for you are.

Other avenues of Off-Campus Placements

The other avenues of off-campus placements can be-

  • Referral in a company through a senior
  • Direct walk-ins
  • Job platforms
  • Social media platforms

Let’s see the important one by one-

Referral in a company through a senior– So if you have any seniors you are on good terms with and if they are working in a company of your choice you can ask them to refer you to that company in case they have an opening.

Direct walk-ins– Direct walk-ins as the name suggests allowed to directly walk into a company for an interview. Without any prior appointment, this does not mean you can just walk in any time any day actually company is organized direct walk-in interview on certain days and have certain time slots which are usually mentioned on the company website or other social media pages. You can be on the lookout for these and use them to get yourself in the interview.

Now coming back to the meaning of off-campus placements. The placement cell of the campus and the college has no role to play in them. It is a good chance for you to show of your college’s image and apply to the company of your choice.

So if you belong to a not-so-good college and have always been what it’s about, and how it will reflect in your career, you can take a breath of Campus placements allow you to showcase your skills to get a job.

So if you have the right skills then you can approach your dream companies and apply for a position with them. Even if they do not visit your campus for recruitment there is no restriction on which company you can apply to all the time they have openings for the job role of your choice.

While going for off-campus placements there are usually more rounds than in an on-campus placement. You may have to go through multiple Subject Specific Written Assessments, Aptitude Tests, Group discussions, or GD which may or may not take place and completely depends on the company hiring process and Multiple Interview Rounds there.

There is no panel here but different individuals in the company who will take your interview so one can be an HR interview followed by an interview with the manager of the team you will be working for or even one with the head of the department if the company is small in size.

Next, you will need an updated resume, and also a cover letter for each company that you apply to.

Pros and Cons of On-Campus Placements & Off-Campus Placements

Pros and Cons of On-Campus Placements & Off-Campus Placements

Pros and Cons of On-Campus Placements

Pros of On-Campus Placements

We will start with the pros or benefits of on-campus placements which are as follows-

  • Save time and energy
  • Limited Competition
  • College and company Rapport Benefits
  • References are not necessary

Save time and energy

Since company recruiters come to the college to recruit students do not have to reach out to companies to check if they have an opening, or go about traveling to various companies to give interviews and everything happens in one place, thus it saves a lot of time, money, and energy. There is no need for job hunting so if campus placement is good in a college then more students are getting placed in the company before the last year of college.

Limited Competition

There is limited competition in on-campus placements students have to compete with their peers only, and not the entire community. Thus, the competition is limited in on-campus placements and it is fairly easy to impress the recruiter from a small group of aspirants as compared to off-campus placements where the student is competent with not just the students from their own college but from many colleges across the country.

College and Company Rapport Benefits

Many prestigious colleges have tie-ups with big brands who come to these colleges to recruit the best students. Students can avail these rapport benefits between the two parties and utilize this opportunity to get recruited by a good company when they come for hiring on campus.

References are not necessary

For on-campus placement, references are not necessary while for off-campus placement get benefits from a reference. Your college professor or previous employers or a good word from any reference of yours working in that company may be an added bonus such references are not required in on-campus placements.

Cons of On-Campus Placements

The cons or disadvantages of on-campus placements are as follows-

  • College name and active/inactive status of T&P cell
  • Only the Top layer of students get recruited
  • Late joining and meager compensation
  • Lack of variety of options

College name and active/inactive status of T&P cell

The types and number of companies that come to your college will depend a lot on how good your college is and also how the act of the T&P cell of your college is. Also if college weather is inactivity in talent & placement may not get many companies to come for hiring. So the college name and the status of his T&P cell become a big factor and will become a disadvantage while sitting for on-campus placements.

Apart from this Limited companies come to recruit from the campus and chances are that the company of your choice may not come to your college for recruitment.

Only the Top layer of students get recruited

The second disadvantage is that only the top layer of students get recruited to good companies while the students with an average CGPA end up either getting recruited in not-so-good companies or words cannot be placed anywhere in on-campus placements. But don’t worry if you don’t get placed in on-campus placements, off-campus placements will always come to your rescue.

Late joining and meager compensation

The next disadvantage of On-campus placement is late joining and meager compensation. Now both these points are not universal and will differ from college to college and company to company many times in on-campus placements companies hire students in bulk and may not give them immediate joining dates.

The joining date may be delayed for a year and this creates frustration and anxiety in a lot of students. The second point we have mentioned here is about meager compensation again this will depend on the company and a lot on the reputation of your college for not so good colleges the companies of a meager compensation while the same company may offer higher compensation to students from better colleges this is a vein that we all have to deal with.

But it should not deter you from applying to companies off-campus where you have an equal footing and can compete for better roles as well as better salaries.

Lack of variety of options

The last disadvantage that we will talk of here is the lack of variety of options what is meant by this? is that if you are looking to find an internship or job outside of your field of study then on-campus placements may not be the right fit for you. So if you are from A B Tech college then chances are other companies that come will recruit you for the job related to your field of study.

So let’s say you are a computer science student who wants to apply for a job or internship in the field of graphic design companies who have this role of a graphic designer may not come to your college for placements since your college does not have expertise in producing students fit for this role does placing you at a disadvantage.

So we look at the pros and cons of on-campus placements now let’s move on to off-campus placements.

So you will not have to work for that extra remuneration but it may just fall in your lap.

More Learning

While sitting for off-campus placements you are essentially competing with everyone who is looking for a job in that role in that company. Hence, the competition is more here but at the same time you also learn how to land a job on your own, You do your own research, and find out more about the job opportunities.

You are on your own

The second challenge is that you are on your own so in on-campus placements, the college takes care of getting companies, arranging interviews, and getting students ready. But you are on your own when applying for off-campus placements. You need to find job opportunities and search for job openings which is the task on its own, then you have to apply for job roles, then interview with the companies, and travel to different cities for interviews. The interview was in off-campus placements know nothing about your background they will grill you more in the interviews to make sure you are a good fit for their company. Hence, when you sit for off-campus interviews you need to be more prepared.

Higher experience

The last challenge that you are likely to face is asking the recruiters for more work experience. Company is generally asked for experience when they recruit off-campus. This can be a job experience or an internship experience which freshers usually get perplexed between the contradiction that they need a job for an experienced, and need an experience for a job but if you have done an internship or work on the value of a project during your college you can use it to your advantage, In this case after all, once you get an interview is all about impressing the employer.
