What is Personality Development?
INTRODUCTION
We can define personality as a set of individual differences that are affected by the development of an individual’s values, attitudes, personal memories, social relationships, habits, and skills. Personality development means enhancing and grooming one’s outer and inner self to bring about a positive change in life.
This process includes boosting one’s confidence, improving communication skills, widening one’s scope of knowledge, developing certain hobbies and skills, etc.
In other words, your personality show which type of person you are, which is shown by the way you behave, feel, and think.
According to the Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English, “The word personality means “whole nature or character of a person”. The word “Ality” in personality means “true nature”. Thus, “Personality” literally means “true nature of a person”.
In Sanskrit, man is called “vyakti” meaning one who has vyaktatha or clarity. So, personality development specifically stands for “helping an individual to have all those thoughts and actions that give better clarity on what a person should be compared with what he/she is on the above-mentioned parameters and teach him/her those skills which he/she lacks.
Human beings experience the world through four psychological functions such as ‘sensation’, ‘intuition’, ‘feelings’, and ‘thinking’, and out of these, one of them is normally dominant in an individual. Therefore, psychologists use these as yardsticks for identifying the personality type of a person.
The development of one’s personality, done in the right manner is a challenging and rewarding task for every individual, particularly for the energetic youth who can gain much from it. It is challenging in that it demands hard, methodical labor, perseverance, and careful attention.
And it is rewarding since no effort in this direction goes in vain. In fact, every effort brings success and satisfaction proportionate to the attempt. Moreover, it is every person’s duty to work towards it, since personality development is necessary for success in any field.
Types Of Personality Psychology Theories
The types of personality psychology theories are as follow-
Biological Theory
This theory suggests that genetics are responsible for personality. Some researches show that there is a link between genetics and personality traits.
Behavioral Theory
According to this theory, personality is the result of interaction between the individual and the environment. This theory studies observable and measurable behaviors, rejecting theories that take internal thoughts and feelings into account.
Psychodynamic Theory
This theory of personality is heavily influenced by the work of Sigmund Freud. It emphasizes the influence of the unconscious mind and childhood experience on personality. This theory includes Sigmund Freud’s psychosexual stage theory and Erik Erikson’s stages of psychosocial development.
Freud believes the three components of personality are id, ego, and superego. The id is responsible for all needs and urges, while the superego is responsible for ideals and morals. The ego moderates between the demands of the id and the superego.
Erikson believed that personality progressed through a series of stages, with certain conflicts arising at each stage. Success in any stage depended upon successfully overcoming the conflicts.
Trait Theory
This theory approaches one of the largest areas in personality psychology. According to this theory, personality is made up of many broad traits. A trait is basically a relatively stable characteristic that causes an individual to behave in certain ways.
